Art By Michelle Etsy Shop | Art & Photography Prints for sale

Friday, February 11th, 2011

I am sure that some of you who follow me on Twitter and Facebook will already know that I have recently opened a shop on Etsy for selling signed Fine Art prints of my drawings, paintings and photography.  I will eventually also add some original artwork (drawings, paintings and ACEO’s) as well as some of my handcrafted sterling silver and gemstone jewellery.

My Etsy shop Art By Michelle is now all set up and I have been busy stocking with new items.  Many of the 8″x10″ and 8″x12″ prints listed are in stock ready for immediate shipping, smaller sizes and different papers, canvas, and paper finishes (matt, lustre, gloss, metallic) can be custom ordered.  The shipping price applies to the first print only, additional prints in the same or smaller size ship free of charge.

Prices are currently listed in $US as the Etsy market is predominantly North American, but I can change that to $AUD in the future if necessary.  Listed fine art and photography prints for sale can also be ordered directly from me via email and payments can be made through Paypal or Direct Deposit/Money Order for Australian customers.

I am adding new art and photography prints for sale on a daily basis, so if there is a painting or artwork that you would particularly like that is not currently listed, please drop me an email and I will add it to the shop for you.

New Year New Look Website | South West Photography

Monday, January 24th, 2011

It seems like only yesterday I was finishing commissions and getting ready for Christmas and here it is almost the end of January already!  I was a bit shocked to realize today that the kids go back to school next week and I am no where near organized for that yet.

The time has probably gone so quickly because so much time and effort has been put into re-designing my photography website South West Photography.  It has been a mammoth undertaking, and there are still a few things that need tweaking here and there, but I am really pleased with the results.  The pricing  and products for both event and portrait  photography have been re-structured with new options added (both prints and digital file downloads), and my photographic art prints and products available for sale through Redbubble and Zazzle can now be easily seen on the website (although the Photography For Sale section is still being added to).

Although the plan is to re-design this website, especially in regards to creating a similar design for my painting and drawing prints on Redbubble and Zazzle, I am really looking forward to being able to focus on re-starting the children and family portrait photography.  My portrait photography has has been on hold since we moved away from the city, so if anyone living in the south west region is interested in having portraits of their children or family, please feel free to contact me for a chat and to find out more about the special offer I currently have for portrait sessions.

This is a screen capture of the new front page – although the images are set to rotate to show a different selection of images every few seconds.  I’d love to know what you think about the new design!

Royalty Free Photography | Stock Photographs for Artists

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

As an artist, I am well aware of the difficulties of obtaining good quality, high resolution photographs that are both suitable for reference material for paintings and drawings, as well as being Royalty Free (ie you can sell the original painting yo0u create or prints of the painting).  Although there are a few large stock photo websites that offer free stock photography images, I personally stopped using them because quite frankly every artist and his dog knows about them and its impossible to create an original artwork when hundreds of other artists around the world have painted the same image.  Even though some of these images can be used for reference to paint from – you don’t have permission to sell the original artwork or prints of the artwork.  Not to mention the fact that unless you contact the photographer directly you do not know if the image is truly royalty free or if it has been submitted by someone other than the legal copyright owner.

As any compulsive, obsessive photographer knows, that perfect photograph is usually surrounded with at least a few shots that don’t quite make the grade for a sale-able print or alternatively you get so many great shots that you have to scrutinize at pixel level to pick your discards. Either way, I have thousands of images that I am not planning to personally use, so I have decided to offer some of them specifically for artists to use as reference material for drawings and paintings.  Initially I am thinking of making the images available for immediate download and possibly offer a CD of images at some stage in the future – the logistics for both need consideration and with Christmas looming and commission deadlines I won’t have a lot of time for this until after Christmas.  The benefit of this is that I can hopefully get some feedback from what type of images other artists would like.

As a self confessed obsessive-compulsive photographer (OCP), I have photos of a huge range of subjects – if it moves, I’ll shoot it…and if it dosn’t move I’ll probably still shoot it!  So I have photos of animals (dogs, cats, horses, wildlife, farm animals, birds, insects, reptiles), landscapes, seascapes, flowers, plants, trees and a whole stack of texture and close-up nature photos that only other artists will appreciate like grass at different angles, close up animal anatomy, fence posts, rocks, tree bark, leaf veins, clouds, silhouettes, sand, shadows, waves etc etc.

So artist friends, I’d love your suggestions as to what type of photographs I should start with? You can either leave your suggestions as a comment or send me an email. If you’d like to be advised when images are made available for download, just let me know and I will add you to the mailing list.

I have to say this as unfortunately my images have been stolen numerous times in the past: just to make it very clear so that there is no mis-understanding  - images that I post on my website for other artists to use in their artwork will be clearly marked as Royalty Free images for use as Artist Reference photographs.   All other artwork images and photographs displayed on this website or elsewhere on the internet, without exception are © Copyright All Rights Reserved and may not be used in any manner without my prior written permission.

Leeuwin-Naturaliste | South West Landscape Photography

Sunday, November 28th, 2010
I’ve been lucky enough to make a couple of day trips down the south west coast in the last few weeks.  While I am definitely a country girl, you can’t help but be awed by the majesty of the coastline in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

To ensure delivery of gifts and cards in time for Christmas, Redbubble advises the following:

December is the busiest time of the year for all postal networks, and as Redbubble ships from printers all around the globe, shipping times can vary.  Once your order has been manufactured, in most cases it will end up in the hands of your local mail service, which can be at the mercy of severe weather, postal strikes, customs, dogs, and sometimes alien abduction. While we will do our best to make and send your item as soon as possible, we don’t have control over your local postal system. While we can never guarantee that you will receive orders by a certain date, you should aim to place your Christmas orders with Redbubble before these dates to have the best chance of arriving before Christmas:

*Edit to add an explanation of what Black Friday and Cyber Monday are all about – being Australian I really had no idea, Black Friday is normally a Friday that falls on the 13th day of the month!  Anyway…as explained very well by Amy-Elyse, Black Friday and Cyber monday relate to Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping in the USA.

“In the U.S. people camp out starting the day before thanksgiving to buy cheap stuff friday morning. Friday after Thankgiving to the following monday is the big shopping day for the holidays. Friday is known as Black Friday because it is the day that pulls businesses solidly “Into the Black” (as in bookeeping) A lot of businesses rely on this weekend to make or break their year end quarter, so they offer ridiculous mark downs on limited quantities of select “Hot ticket Items” in the hopes that you will join the crush to try to get there in time for them, and either fail and buy other not so discounted stuff or succeed and also buy other non discounted stuff.  Cyber Monday refers to the following monday when people who skipped it friday clog the internet buying stuff online to make sure it arrives in time for gift giving”.

So there you go…Black Friday and Cyber Monday – you learn something new everyday!

Rodeo Broncs and Bulls | South West Photography

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

I went along to Harvey Dickson’s Rodeo down here at Boyup Brook to get some reference photos for some western and rodeo inspired paintings that I have planned.  I can understand where the origins for many of the events lay – calf roping, bareback and saddle bronc…even the steer undecorating, but I really have to wonder who on earth first thought of trying to ride a full grown bull that would rather kill you?  LOL, must have been a man with more bulls than brains;)

Here’s a few of my favourite shots.

WA Landscape Photography | South West Photography

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I can’t help myself, I take thousands of photographs of everything around me, both for reference material for my artwork and because my camera is just another medium to create art.  I don’t always have time to go through all my photos and select my favorites to display, but the other day I realized that my photography galleries were very outdated and thought I had better add some new ones.  This is just a few of the new additions, the rest rest can be seen in the Landscape and Animal& Wildlife Photography Galleries.  These photos were all taken within a short distance of my home, except the Tawny Frogmouth which was found a little further south.  Enjoy!

10th Light Horse Bunbury | South West Photography

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

The 10th Light Horse Bunbury Troop also put on a riding and Tent Pegging display at the Dardanup Heavy Horse Show at Heritage Park.  Although Tent Pegging originated as a Military maneuver in which cavalry soldiers would gallop through enemy camps, using their lances and swords to remove tent pegs to collapse tents and cause confusion in order to gain the upper hand in a surprise attack.  Over time, tent pegging was used as a cavalry drill for weapons practice and as part of Military tournaments and competitions.  The Australian State Mounted Police also used Tent Pegging for demonstrations of their riding skills, but it was not until 1964 that the first Australian civilian tent pegging team was formed.  This equestrian sport was recognized Internationally in 1982, and International competitions are now conducted by the Federation Equestre International.

If you would like more information about the equestrian sport of Tent Pegging, please visit the Australian Tent Pegging Association website for more information.
