I just wanted to let you know about a new forum for artists as well as musicians, fashion designers, and filmmakers, http://www.PutItOn.com. The site gives you a free gigabyte of space for portfolio, there is no commission taken for sales, audio and visual works can been streamed in their entirety, you can create live personal broadcasts for your followers, and anything you write will be translated into 10 languages. So check it out!

I completely agree with you about the confusion around how to properly leverage Facebook. I too struggle with wanting to post more stuff to my personal profile than my fan page, so if you figure out how to strike a good balance I'd love to hear your ideas. For now, my fan page is relatively static, and features pretty much the same content as my website. I'd like that to change, though, so I'm searching for ways to make it a livelier place that's more interactive.

Thankyou Vienne! A glimpse into the animals thoughts and maybe sometimes even its soul is what motivates me to create most of my artwork. I feel a bit weird actually, so many people tell me that I have a gift or talent, but I am not so sure, its taken alot of time and practice (as in most of my life), I guess when you enjoy doing something so much, it makes it easier to keep persisting to improve and develop your skills.

Thanks everyone! Sandi, I have finally done another cat (Blink) and actually have two more on the drawing board. If remember to stop and take photos as i go, I will post them as WIP's as well.

Leila, I agree about the darks and normally I would push the shadows a lot more because I like strong art with high contrast for impact. Unfortunately I ran out of tooth on the drafting film and it would not take any more pigment, but I am contemplating having a go at the back of the film to see if that will help darken the shadows.

Considering this was something new you were delving into, I think you did a wonderful job. The only critique I might have is that I think if the shadows/darker parts of the artwork were, well, darker, the piece would be generally stronger and stand out more.

Other than that, it looks perfect. Great structure!

He is so approachable that you make me yearn to embrace him. I love cats ... all kinds. Seems that getting the fur right is always a challenge. So I am sure you have a sense of fulfillment whenever you have completed a piece. You present quality portraits and you have captured the innate vulnerability of this magnificient tiger. It's as if he knows he is something special but hasn't quite realized it yet. Wonderful!

Please E-mail me about a project that I believe you would be perfect for. Thank you. "Sleeping Kitten - Dancing Dog!"

I’m lousy with acrylics. I envy you for that perfect dog portrait using acrylics as your medium. You see, I’m into oil paints. I really think it’s impossible for me to give justice to every detail of a pet or animal portrait using acrylics. But you just did it right!!! Awesome!

I am amazed at how good you are at capturing the animals. I almost wish I had a dog so you could paint it! Would you care to trade blog links?

Hi Ainslie!

Thanks for your comments:) I would love to see some of your artwork, and you are more than welcome to send me a photo if you have finished your arabian. Arabians are probably my favourite horse breed (although I am quite fond of fresians as well), I had an arab/quarterhorse for many years and just loved her spirit and personality.

That quote is so true, I really feel that who I am as a person has been shaped by my art, and how I see the world because of my art. Creating artwork that focuses on the spirit of snaimls is central to that for me as well - the thrill of having an animal come to life on a piece of paper or canvas just from the movements of your hands and the application of pigment in whichever medium I am working is something that I don't think I will ever tire of.

Hi Michelle,

I love the portrait you have created of Tia the shar pei. The bull mastiff is fantastic.

About 5 years ago, I had our black shar pei painted by a Brisbane pet artist Tracey Keller.

Its not as realistic a portrait as yours, its taken from a photo (that I don't still have) and the angle of the portrait is looking down at the dog. In one sense I am not as happy with it now having seen your portrait with its attention to detail, but then on the other hand I am as its a fun colourful painting that looks great in my 3 year old sons room.

I could send a photo of it to you if you were interested in seeing it.

Hi Michelle,

I find that the more I look through your website, the more I discover and see more of myself too! We are so similar- just on the other side of the country! Your comments and way of thinking with your art and animals is how I relate to them as well.

I was just looking at the Arab filly above and wondering where you got the reference photo from? Do you like Arabians? You have really inspired me to create a pastel of an Arabian! I would love to send you the finished piece, (photo) for your critique? See how I go. It may take me awhile, as I work full time for a specialist surgeon, but I create my art with any spare time I have! I wish I was a full time artist... oneday!

This is one of my favourite quotes by fellow equine artist Christine Borstel:

"In art you both lose and find yourself, at the same time". For me, this is so true and animals help me do this.

Michelle,

Amazing pictures. Having a personal visit from Skippy is superb! I don't know what it is with animals and birds, but they seem to have a great knack of knowing just when your camera has focused, then leave! You've done a great job getting these.

LOL - yeah it is pretty cool:) I am thinking of using the first pic as a reference for a painting at some stage, or I might combine a few different kangaroos and paint a mob scene.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for your entry in my blog! I looked at yours too and I like what you make! I saw that you're also on WetCanvas. I participate in the WDE (weekend drawing event) there each week. Great Artsite.
Good luck with your artwork.
Best regards, Connie

Hallo Michelle

I love these little paintings ... the colours are so beautiful. I am not surprised that they take you quite a long time to do .... nothing good ever comes without time and attention!

Thankyou! I did this one from an incredible photo provided by another artist in the image library at wetcanvas. I must go and check who it was so I can give proper credit for it. I fell in love with this photo, the facial expression on this guy is so beautiful, it is like you are getting a little glimpse into his soul. I realy wish I had kept this one - I sold it on Ebay for very little money and the buyer never bothered to leave feedback to let me know whether she liked it or not:(

Love your "Tall Poppies"! I've been a big fan of poppy fields since the first time I watched "The Wizard of Oz."

I once tried to grow them, but the local climate looked at me, laughed, and said, "You want <I><B>what?</B></I>"

Thank you both!

Darla, I'd love to try scratchboard as well, but have never seen it over here. Plus I need a new medium at the moment like a hole in the head!

With black dogs I find that the lighting in the photo reference is important, you really need to be able to see and re-create a full range of values (from deepest black to brightest white) to be able to create the 'black' fur.

White fur on the other hand, is something I still struggle with, so end up using lots of different colours to create the forma nd shadows.

Michelle, that is a great job. I know black dogs are really hard to draw (at least for me, but you are making it look easy!) :) I saw an artist on Artwanted.com who did a black lab on scratchboard. It came out really neat. I'm going to try that medium sometime.

I was a bit sad to part with him, but he has gone to a good home with another ACEO loving artist:)

Very nice work! I used to do a lot of Oils and charcoals years back and then we bought a smaller house and one excuse led to another and I just quit. In fact I will go and post three things I did that I know I have a picture of around here someplace, and you can come check it out if you like. Although my sight usually runs to- my garden and my pets. I have been thinking about getting back into my art. And after seeing your beautiful art work it makes me even more determined. Thank you!
