Dogue de Bordeaux Painting

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

I met this gorgeous Dogue de Bordeaux some time ago at a dog show and new straight away that I would paint his portrait which I have finally managed to do.  Actually, I ainted him a while ago now, but I’m still playing catch up with my blog!  The Dogue de Bordeaux is still a rare breed, but most people will remember Tom Hanks’ co-star in the 1989 comedy “Turner & Hooch” and camera chomping dog in the Olympus Digital Camera advertising campaign.

A selected range of quality products featuring this painting “Stormy Dogue” can be seen below and are now available for purchase.

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

I am finally catching up to date with my blog posts, just a few more to do now:)  This is Ralphie, the first pet portrait I have painted in my “Inspire me to Paint” series.

Ralphie was a very special rescue dog and survivor of Hurricane Katrina who passed away in March of this year. Ralphies story submitted by his owner Dana can be read on my facebook page Michelle Wrighton Artist.

Sophie – Shih Tzu Portrait painting

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Sophie is a gorgeous Shih Tzu puppy that I had the opportunity to photograph several years ago. Sophie’s all grown up now, so taking a trip back in time to capture her cheeky puppy personality in this painting was alot of fun!

Shih Tzu’s are an intelligent, active toy breed whose ancestry is rather obscure. Believed to have originated in Tibet, they are the oldest and smallest of the Tibetan ‘holy dog’ breeds.  The breed is known for their naturally long, flowing coat, however, they do require a lot of grooming and care, so many pet Shih Tzu’s choose to have their coats clipped short for easy care.

Italian Greyhound | Dog Portrait Painting

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Italian Greyhounds would have to be one of the most elegant and delicate looking breed of dogs and they have the most beautiful eyes! Italian Greyhounds, or “Iggy’s” as they are affectionately called, are the smallest of the sighthound family and despite their Toy breed classification and companion dog status, many still retain the instinct to chase small animals and birds!

The breed has a long and noble history spanning thousands of years.  Mummified remains of dogs similar to Italian Greyhounds have been excavated from the tombs of the Pharaoh’s in the Valley of Kings and it is believed that the breed originated in Egypt around 3000BC.  These small hounds were taken to the  Mediterranean by the Romans around 600 BC, and because of their popularity in Italy during the middle ages, they became known as Italian Greyhounds and were frequent companions to European Royalty and Aristocracy including Mary Queen of Scots, Charles 1, Catherine the great and Queen Victoria.  This elegant breed has been portrayed in art throughout the centuries from paintings to carvings and ceramic statues.

I strive to capture the essence of the individual animal in my artwork and so much of this is conveyed through the eyes, which are what compelled me to paint this gorgeous Italian Greyhound from a photo reference by fellow artist C. Sheeter.  I hope I have captured that unique spark in ‘Magnifico’.

Horse colic and Failing Fostering 101

Monday, April 19th, 2010

First of all I have to have a whinge about Telstra’s internet services for country clients.  I admit our wireless connection is reasonably good, but  is absolutely pointless when you can’t access the internet anyway because the 10GIG combined maximum Up/download limit per month before getting capped back to 1992 dial-up speed is absolutely, positively pathetic!  C’mon Telstra its 2010! Country people are not stuck in the dark ages without computers, how about doing your country customers a favour, get with the times and give us a few of the options your city customers enjoy!

LOL ok,  rant over for the moment anyway!  It is a genuine complaint, probably aggravated today due to grumpiness from getting very little sleep last night due to my daughters little standarbred mare Sandy having colic.   She is feeling a lot better today thank goodness.  I think it was a combination of new grass after the rains and a change in feed – although she was introduced to it slowly she is a bit of a piggy and stole some of Crickets in the morning.  She’s back on just hay rations for a few days and hopefully won’t have any more problems.

And as for Fostering Dogs 101…or How to fail Fostering 101 in four easy steps:

1) Vow and declare to never have any other breed than Border Collies.

2) Agree to look after my sisters one year old Koolie while she finds him a good home.

3) Before we get half way home decide we will keep him if he fits in with our four Border Collies.

Well the four Border Collies seem to be accepting him into the pack quite well, so it looks like our canine family now consists of 4 collies and a Koolie.  Not quite a Border Collie, but at least he’s a sheepdog:)

And Flash the Koolie:

Update:  Unfortunately Flash was unable to stay with us, if it was just one or two things we would have worked through them, but he was constantly urinately  in the house (causing Zeke and Bolt to go backwards in their toilet training as well), he became very domineering over the young boys, Bolt in particular and was making him very nervy, he was going up/over/through fences to chase the sheep, horses and chickens (a habit he taught Bolt that we are still trying to break).  Unfortunately that would have meant long term confinement on a chain for Flash which is something that I do not agree with.  Luckily his breeder was able to take him back and Flash is now living on the farm where he was born.

Koolies (also known as Coolies/German Coolies) are an Australian developed working dog  predominantly bred to work sheep and have many similarities in personality and nature to Border Collies.  As they have been bred for working ability rather than for conformation show ring/beauty pageant looks, there is a range of variations in size, build and coat colour within the breed according to the terrain and type of work they were required to do.

Big news for ‘Angel’ | Canine Oil Painting

Friday, March 12th, 2010

My original oil painting of ‘Angel’ the American Staffordshire Terrier was featured as Today’s Best product – considering that Zazzle has millions of unique designs this really is a huge honour!

American Staffordshire Terrier Pet Portrait in Oils by Michelle Wrighton

When I painted “Angel” I really wanted to portray the loyal, loving devotion that these beautiful dogs have towards their family when they are bred and raised by ethical, responsible people.

Unfortunately not all American Staffordshire Terriers and Pit Bull Terriers are as lucky as “Angel” and don’t always end up in responsible homes.

If you would like to purchase a print of ‘Angel’ or to view a range of gifts and merchandise featuring this artwork, please visit my Zazzle Giftshop or Redbubble.
