Tuesday, July 13th, 2010I’m currently in the process of setting up my new studio gallery:) Seeing as I have not yet formally ‘moved in’ and started painting, I thought it would be a good idea to post some photos before I start and it develops into messy disorganized chaos (LOL I’m sure most artists reading this will chuckle as ‘messy studio syndrome’ is a condition that seems to afflict many of us;).
I know that I am beyond lucky to have a dedicated, completely self contained studio gallery less than 200 metres from my home…even more so because I have stunning views right from my studio window as well as a verandah that will be perfect for painting plein air landscapes:)
The gallery won’t actually be open to the public for a while as most of my artwork was sold before we moved from the city so I need to get busy and build up an inventory of paintings!

Sunday, July 11th, 2010I am slowly resigning myself to the idea that the ‘challenges’ of country wireless internet means I can’t necessarily update my blog whenever its suitable to me and that blog posts are probably better late than never. So in that spirit, this is an older digital painting of Annabelle, a black Standard Poodle, with a step by step progress demonstration image to show how the painting was created.

Black Standard Poodle Pet Portrait Painting
Although painted digitally using my Intuos 4 drawing tablet and ‘digital’ paintbrush, I develop the painting digitally just like I do when painting or drawing with traditional art mediums. I sketch the subject, and then start adding colour by blocking in the main shapes and values (shadows and highlights), and ‘glaze’ with varying degrees of transparent colour to create depth and form. Finally the details are added to complete the painting.

If you would like to commission a portrait of your poodle or other pet in traditional oil paints, graphite/charcoal or a digital painting such as this one, please contact me to discuss your requirements.

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010Just a quick update post this time, no art to share at the moment, sorry!
Regular visitors to my blog may have noticed the change in the Facebook buttons on the right hand side of the page. I have decided to separate my art (drawings, paintings) from my existing South West Photography page. The new Facebook page is Michelle Wrighton Artist. I’m not 100% sure how I will utilise the Facebook page as opposed to this blog which I will obviously keep updating, but the ease of sharing photos within Facebook makes me think that running a few competitions for pet portrait paintings might be easy and fun to do, so if you are on Facebook, please add my new art page Michelle Wrighton Artist to your favourite pages and you will hear from me soon about the first competition!

Thursday, March 11th, 2010It was definitely time for a facelift for the old blog so the new design is finally online, just in time to celebrate the arrival of my new gift shop at Zazzle. We have selected Zazzle for printing products, prints and giftware for a number of reasons, primarily the high quality of Zazzle products which are endorsde and used by world famous brands such as Hallmark, officially licensed Star Wars and Disney, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Mythbusters, and many more. So this means that products featuring selected reproductions of my artwork are in very good company!
Aside from that, the Zazzle Promise is the sort of thing that I personally take a lot of notice of when purchasing anything from an online store, and I would expect nothing less for customers purchasing products featuring my artwork. The Zazzle promise means that:
- Your satisfaction is Zazzle’s Top Priority. If you are not satisfied for any reason with the final product, you may return your purchase for a replacement or refund within 30 days of receipt.
- Your information is secure – Zazzle SSL secured servers are tested daily to ensure your data will arrive privately and unaltered.
- Zazzle produces products on demand and ships very quickly! Production and shipping is within 24 hours for everything but a few products that take slightly longer than 24 hours to produce and ship.
- And finally a great range of products and gift lines to feature my art, many that you can customise to suit your own preference!
Please click the link below to visit the new gift shop and let me know what you think! New artwork is being added daily and if you would like to be notified of new additions, simply subscribe to this blog, follow me on Twitter or fan me on Facebook

Saturday, September 12th, 2009I have always loved Highland Cattle and finally have had a chance to paint one. This was the first painting that I completed in Corel Painter using my wacom graphics tablet and digital pen. I am amazed at how similar to real painting it is in regards to how the paintbrushes lay down and blend the paint!

'Zippo' Pet Portrait Painting of a Betta (Siamese Fighter) by Michelle Wrighton
Zippo was my daughter’s much loved first Betta fish…who is sadly no longer with us, so this is a memorial pet portrait for my daughter. And below is very poor reference photo that I used to paint Zippo from (I can say that because its an old photo that I took with a tiny point and shoot camera!)

Poor reference photo!
