Daily Painting | Modern Sunset Painting
Monday, December 10th, 2012Another productive day in the studio working with my Interactives acrylics. In the spirit of experimentation, I am actually working on a number of small paintings at the moment, pretty much at the same time. Sounds strange I know, but I am finding it a very valuable technique for removing the intellectual thought process and instead just painting intuitively. While I am quite used to the beginning stages of my artwork looking unusual…or at the very least nothing like the finished piece, working with multiple pieces is quite exhilerating. I usually have 2 or 3 on my easel at one time that I swap with another 2 or 3 during the painting session. Each painting is developed at approximately the same rate as the others, but they complete at different times – sometimes it is simply one glaze of colour that is enough to complete the painting. In some ways, I think it is similar to automatic writing in that I am laying out the paints, holding a paint brush and seeing what happens!
This little sunset painting is what happened today. I have forgotten how difficult paintings are to photograph, this photo dosn’t pick up the delicate mauve transition between the orange and the blue. One of these days I will need to set up my big camera and get some better pics.
Colourful Rainbow calf painting
Monday, March 5th, 2012This gorgeous little calf just begged to painted, and in the spirit of exploring a bolder, less detailed, more expressive style I have painted this. It definitely is fun to not be a slave to create every hair as realistic as possible, but I think I will keep playing and pushing tthrough expressionism and towards abstract maybe.

Donnybrook Rose – Abstract Floral Art Prints and Gifts
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011‘Donnybrook Rose’ was a joy to paint, quite mesmerizing to paint the sweep and flow of the gentle curves reminiscent of a roses delicate petals. Dark purple, magenta, plum and red violets contrast beautifully against the rich gold, copper and pale blue reminiscent of the iridescent sheen on a Ulysses Butterfly’s wings.

Horse of Colour – Contemporary Horse Painting
Saturday, October 1st, 2011‘Horse of Colour’ is an original digital painting in which I have again gone for a contemporary look, focused on the colours rather than detail, using soft pastel hues of violet, lemon, mint and baby blue highlighted brush strokes floated over the blended colours to express the soft romanticism of a much loved kind and gentle show pony. Fishing Boat Art | Abstract painting
Wednesday, May 19th, 2010Considering my normal subject material and style, how different is this one!

Boats at Harbour by Michelle Wrighton
As an animal and wildlife artist, I try to be bold with my colour choices while still retaining a high degree of realism, but I don’t usually get to enjoy using such explosive colour so paintings this one was an awful lot of fun! The fiery red reflections contrast against the cool blues and shades of turquoise greens in a way that would compliment a variety of modern contemporary interior designs. Although painted as a single painting, I like it split up like the image shows as a triptych, but I think it would also work well as a four piece painting. If two is a diptych, and three a triptych, I wonder what a four piece painting is called? I have absolutely no idea, so I better go google and find out!
Original abstract painting inspired by the colours and reflections of Fishing Boat Harbour in Fremantle, Western Australia. Available for purchase printed with archival inks on ready to hang gallery wrapped canvas as well as glossy photographic prints for framing behind glass.

WIP – Precious in Pink, Pug in oils
Monday, July 14th, 2008I forgot that I had a progress photo of Precious on my computer. Precious’s pet portrait is being created with a strong contemporary feel to go with her funky and fashionable patent pink colour:) I have to admit the shine of the patent pink collar is the hardest part to get right. LOL its not something that I usually paint, but I am sure it will work out in the end.
Sorry about the flash glare on this one, oil paintings are proving as difficult to photograph as graphite!
There is still a fair bit of work to do to get Precious and her patent collar looking perfect, but I won’t be able to work on this until I get a couple of commissions wrapped up.
Desert Sunset – Modern/contemporary acrylic landscape
Monday, April 10th, 2006This is the latest piece I have been working on, an acrylic landscape painting created in a modern minimalist style on gallery wrapped chunky canvas. This painting developed quite differently from my original inspiration, so differently in fact that I initially started painting purple clouds! I am quite pleased with the way this one is coming along, as it was the strong contrasts in the light and darks of a desert sunset that I wanted to capture, and in particular I wanted to achieve this with rather bold brush strokes (considering the size of the canvas) and some pallette knife work for added texture. After looking at this piece for several days I am contemplating whether or not to further lighten some of the area around the sun, and some of the reflections in the middle of the painting.
One of the things that I am finding rather surprising with the modern, minimalist, abstract/contemporary styles that I am experimenting with at the moment is just how long they take to complete to my staisfaction – simple and less detailed definitely does not necessarily equate to less time to create, and I can definitely say that I have a new found respect for artists who work in these styles!

Article: What is Small Format Art?
Monday, March 20th, 2006Hi and welcome to my new art blog! My name is Michelle, I am a Western Australian artist who specialises in Pet Portraiture and Small Format Art in a variety of mediums, including graphite (black and white), Artists colour pencils, ink, acrylic and pastels.
Small Format Art (SFA) is defined as any type of artwork that has a maximum size of 14 inches (35.5cm) in any one direction. SFA is collectible, affordable artwork that make wonderful unique displays in homes and offices to suit your own personal decor or personality. SFA can be collected by artist, theme, style, color or an eclectic mix to create an eye catching display to suit your own individual taste. They are especially suited for small display areas such as hallways, mantlepieces and desk tops where larger art work would be unsuitable or simply wouldn’t fit.
As an artist with three small chilren, I love Small Format Art because the smaller size allows me to be creative and productive within the limited time that I have available. Although SFA’s can take 50-60 hours or more to complete over many days or even weeks, it is also very rewarding to be able to complete a finished painting in a looser more artistic style in just a day or two!
I love animals and the majority of the artwork I create is animal portraits. As a professional Pet Portrait Artist, my pet portraits are highly detailed and very realistic – if you would like to see examples, they can be viewed on my website http://www.pencilportraits.com.au.
However, with the SFA I create, I find myself drawn more towards less realistic styles that really express my creativity – I really don’t like labels and would prefer at this point in time not to be limited to creating art within the confines of only one artistic ‘style’. Many different art movements inspire me and as a result, the SFA that I create is an eclectic mix of styles that might normally be labelled as abstract expressionism, minimalism, surrealism or modern/contemporary with some representational pieces thrown in for good measure! That is my idea ofArtistic Freedom:)
I’ve decided to create this blog as a separate entity to my original blog http://www.petportraitartist.blogspot.com/ for several reasons – firstly, for myself I like the idea of maintaining a visual diary of my work and at the same time being able to record some of my thoughts and emotions surrounding each piece, and secondly the majority of Small Format Art that I create will be available for sale in different venues such as Ebay, Art Wanted, Art Cards Wanted and Art By Us and by listing each artwork here in one place, it will be easier for me to keep track of everything, plus I would imagine it will be a bit easier for those who like to collect my artwork:) If you would like to join me on this journey of dscovery, please add this blog to your RSS feed to recieve notification when new art work is added (simply click on the second orange button on the right that says ‘Feed’ – or if you use atom click the first button that says ‘Site Feed’).
Cheers
Michelle
