Equine Art | Acrylic Horse Portrait Painting in progress

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

Its been quite a while since I have painted a horse in acrylics, but I have recently been inspired to paint my beautiful arab mare, Tessa. Actually, she is such an inspiring muse and I have had such fun painting this one that I have several more planned. This painting is 8″x13″ approx on Blue Lake Watercolour paper.

I’ve deliberately tried to work a bit looser with this, trying to find the happy medium between adding in enough detail without making it photorealistic.  That is a much harder task than it might seem!  Its nearly finished, just needing some more highlights, shadows and then a signature.

The basic sketch

Blocking in the shadows

Starting the background and shadows in her blaze

More blocking in colour

Starting to add some detail

Refining the details

A bit more detail

Sudden Thunder | Thoroughbred Horse Painting

Monday, November 15th, 2010

My Thoroughbred gelding provides me with endless amusement and artistic reference material.  He was being a goofball (as usual), but his pose reminded me of the power within the horse that is ready to explode at any moment.  Painting him with a stormy background was a perfect setting for “Sudden Thunder”.

Thoroughbred Horse | Equine Pet Portrait in Pencil

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Finally here is the last of the graphite pencil drawings I did before my daughters accident, its taken a while to post it I know, but better late than never;)

This image is a photograph of the drawing, I had quite a bit of trouble getting a suitable image of this one, my scanner made it look very scratching and textured and even the photograph (although better than the scan) looks to have more texture than the original drawing which actually has smooth blended pencil strokes and much smoother tonal transitions.

I have some new graphite horse drawings (Clydesdales in harness) and a freisian cow that I hope to start on next week – or at least as soon as I finish a couple of digital portraits that I am still working on that are just not coming together the way I want them too.

I’ve also started to throw some paint on canvas in order to learn some new painting techniques – I’ve lost enthusiasm for painting in thin glazes (layers) and taking weeks on end to finish a painting so I plan to develop my skills painting alla prima/wet in wet and also plein air landscapes.  Suffice it to say that at the moment I think it was easier to paint photo-realistically (you just paint what you see)  than it is to paint more…painterly with less detail and more textured brushstrokes while still creating an end result that looks like what its meant to look like (as opposed to looking like an abstract pile of mud!) I would love to follow in the footsteps of the Daily Painters and create a small painting every day as that is the best way to develop new skills and techniques, as well as see tangible development over time.  I know that I can’t commit to a daily painting, but I do have a goal in mind of 100 small paintings in this new, less detailed , more painterly ‘loose’ style – not sure how long it will take to complete, but as they say its the journey thats important not the destination, so as long as I enjoy the process and learn something along the way then its time well spent.

Horse of Colour | Modern horse art painting

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

‘Horse of Colour’ is a new digital oil horse painting in which I have again gone for a contemporary look, focused on the colours rather than detail, using soft pastel hues of violet, lemon, mint and baby blue highlighted brush strokes floated over the blended colours to express the soft romanticism of a much loved kind and gentle show pony.

Dark Horse | Equine Fine Art Painting

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I’ve always loved working with dark coloured and black backgrounds to create dramatic lighting in a painting.  Colour Pencils and pastels are two traditional mediums that this technique works extremely well with, and I am pleased to say that it is the same for paintings created with digital pastels.  It takes an awful lot of self control for me to stop adding more and more detail to a painting (traditional or digital), but I am loving exploring painting more freely and expressively while still capturing the essence of my subject, so I can see a few more of this style of painting in the future.

Friesian Spirit | Horse Painting

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

I’m sure that artists reading this will understand, LOL and non-artists will just think I am weird, but sometimes a painting takes on a life of its own with such determination that it almost seems paint itself – almost as if the subject has such strength of personality and character that its spirit insists on being immortalised in art.

Friesian Spirit is one of those paintings.

Ready to Run | Horse Racing Art

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

There is nothing quite like the power and majesty of a Thoroughbred Race Horse, and this digital painting is the first in a series of Racing Paintings that I have planned (for both Standardbreds and Thoroughbred race horses).  Thanks to photographer Cathy Sheeter for the wonderful reference photo.

Bay Arab Filly – Horse Portrait in Pastels

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

I havn’t done a portrait of a horse for a while, so decided to do one of this lovely Bay Arab filly in pastels. I’m quite happy with the way the horse turned out, but the background grass and trees still needs a bit more work to complete it. The horse itself is pretty much complete although I will leave it for a few days and see if any minor adjustments are needed. Pastels on Art Spectrum Colourfix sanded paper.

Cheers

Michelle
