Equestrian Event Photography Website Update

All equestrian event photos since 2015 (with a list of archived events from 2007-2015) are available again at https://www.equine-photography.com.au/ I've had a number of computer and website challenges for the past few weeks so to resolve the event photo website as quickly as possible at this busy time of year, I have renewed with zenfolio.  This means all your saved favourites and previous order details are still accessible if you have created an account on the website. IMPORTANT CHANGES I've made...

Chiarascuro – Black Background horse portraits

One of my favourite techniques in traditional oil paintings is chiarascuro, a classic technique developed by da Vinci, Caravaggio and Rembrandt who used high contrast shadows and light to create drama in their paintings. I don't have the time (or the patience) required to create photorealistic oil paintings any more, but I am really enjoying playing with this technique again with my studio lighting equipment....

3 Things to know about Black Background Equine Portraits

I've had a few inquiries recently about the set-up required for the black background equine portraiture that I create, so I thought I would write a post to describe the various options and process involved with each. There are three ways that these black backgrounds are made: completely in photoshop, with artificial light or with a combination of natural light, studio lights and environment. 1. Completely in Photoshop This is the option most event photographers will use for a...

Memories Lie – Photographs Tell the Truth

The passing of time brings many things to our lives, some good, some bad.  Even those things you know are inevitable, still bring heartbreaking sadness. Long term readers of this blog may remember the many years we went through with very traumatic life threatening health issues my husband had, with Royal Flying Doctor trips to Perth, countless hospital admissions, including ICU and more times that he nearly didn't make it than I care to remember.  Four years ago he...

Outdoor Photography sessions in Rural and Regional Locations

On location, outdoor rural family and equine lifestyle photography sessions are for horse lovers and rural families of all ages.  Special sessions are also available for multi-generational farming families. Outdoor photography sessions on farms and rural properties is my passion.  Living in a rural area and having a small 43 acre farm ourselves, I understand how important the land is to you and your family.  I work exclusively on location, which means I travel to you at your farm,...

Why I chose the 5D Mark IV for Equine Photography

Some photographers get all bent out of shape about which is better, Nikon or Canon, I’ve had both, they are excellent brands but for me personally, the Canon line feels better in my hand and I find it more intuitive to use than Nikon.  I also now have a decent investment in Canon glass that I am very happy with, especially my workhorse 70-200mm 2.8L which is the original non-IS version that has never let me down in nearly ten years...

Miniature Horse and Pony Championship Show

AMR South West State Championship Show

I was honoured to be the official photographer at the 2016 Australian Miniature Horse & Pony Registry South West State Championship Show in Manjimup. It was a lovely day despite the heat and it was great to see some lovely mini’s strutting their stuff for judge Tiffany Maddox. Here is a selection of photos from the show. All photographs can be viewed and purchased here:  AMR South West State Championship Show...

Hair of the Dog Top Ten Enhance Creativity Challenge

This week I was honoured to place in the Top Ten for Nicole Begley’s Hair of The Dog Enhance Creativity Challenge, thanks Nicole! There were many amazing entries into this challenge, so I was very pleased to be listed in the Top Ten, and to also be the only non-dog related image with this creative edit in my signature Colour Explosion style....

Bunbury Photography – Horsemans Gymkhana

All photos from the main arena Show Jumping and Show Horse classes at Bunbury Horseman’s Gymkhana on 19 June 2016 have been uploaded to my event photography website http://equine-photography.com.au For something a little bit different, I have created a video slideshow of some of the photos from the Show Horse and Show Jumping classes. Congratulations to everyone who participated, especially seeing as the weather was less than co-operative, especially for the bigger heights in the showjumping! Here are a...
