Grey Arab Horse Portrait – Digital Painting Step by Step

A few people have asked recently how I create my digital paintings so I thought I would write a post with some step by step work in progress images to show how I painted this beautiful grey arab horse portrait. There are a number of ways to create art in a digital format, there really is no right or wrong way – it is all up to the individual artist.  My background is a lifetime spent working with traditional...

Forest Light Landscape Paintingcreated on iPad in Procreate

Forest Light – iPad Painting and Process Video

I am thoroughly enjoying using my iPad to paint with and I am really amazed at how powerful the Procreate app is.  I normally paint digitally on one layer, just like I do on an old fashioned canvas, usually only using layers to test things out before applying to the layer I am working on.  Most digital artists utilise layers extensively as they do have huge benefits and speed up work flow, but I usually end up getting confused,...

Dragon Fantasy Painting

Green Dragon – iPad Fantasy Painting

This is my latest iPad painting – something very different for me!  This is the first time I have tried to paint a dragon (or any reptilian type animal for that matter) in any medium, so it was definitely a learning experience, especially as I normally work from photographic reference and well…this guy is a figment of my imagination so no photos exist to work from! The concept of the dragon laying on a ledge looking at the butterfly...

Hereford Heifer – Cow Painting

Living in a rural area provides me with a constant supply of inspiration for my art.  This young Hereford heifer was the only one to stay to investigate what I was doing when I stopped beside her paddock to get some photos.  The rest took off running as if I had jumped out of the car yelling “Hamburger!” Digitally Hand painted using a wacom Intuos 4 graphics tablet and Corel Painter. Sudden Thunder – Thoroughbred Horse Painting

My Thoroughbred gelding provides me with endless amusement and artistic reference material.  He was being a goofball (as usual), but his pose reminded me of the power within the horse that is ready to explode at any moment.  Painting him with a stormy background was a perfect setting for this hand painted digital painting titled “Sudden Thunder”. Calf Painting – Farm Animal Paintings step by step

Living in a rural area provides me with a never ending supply of subject matter to photograph and paint. Over the last few months, I’ve been able to obtain some beautiful reference photos of the calves and lambs on nearby farms, as well as many of our own Dorper sheep and our first lot of six lambs. This one was painted before calving season started, but the expression on this little guys face depicts the curiosity of cows perfectly....

Modern horse painting – Summer Heat

‘Summer Heat’ is an original digital painting based on a photo I took of my Standardbred gelding Tommy in our back paddock last summer. I avoided putting too much detail in this painting and chose warm yellow and orange hues to really capture the feeling of a shimmery hot summer’s day in rural Australia. Please click the small image below to purchase a range of museum quality Fine Art Canvas and Framed Prints of this painting. Thanks for visiting...

Dark Horse – Equine Fine Art Painting

I’ve always loved working with dark coloured and black backgrounds to create dramatic lighting in a painting. Colour Pencils and pastels are two traditional mediums that this technique works extremely well with, and I am pleased to find that it is the same for paintings created with digital pastels. It takes an awful lot of self control for me to stop adding more and more detail to a painting (traditional or digital), but I am loving exploring painting more...
