Farm Life – Cows Sheep and a Pony

The farm is feeling rather empty at the moment with only the horses, the two cows Matilda and Bangers and our two pet sheep Inky and Angel being the only livestock we have left.  Well we still have the ducks and chickens, but they are technically poultry not livestock.  Bangers has grown huge, much bigger than Holly his pure Jersey mother was.  Even though Bangers hasn’t been handled at all, he has Holly’s sweet temperament and is friendly enough...

Farm Life – Sunset Horses

All photographers know about the ‘Golden hour’ that special hour before sunset when the colour from the setting sun infuses the light in such a way as to create the most stunning portraits of both people and animals. Sometimes however, that beautiful golden light at sunset lasts a lot less than an hour and you only have a very brief opportunity to capture that stunning light in your photographs.  LOL especially when your subjects are animals or kids, neither...

Farm supplies treating milk fever and mastitis in jersey cow

Farm Life – Jersey Cow with mastitis

Poor Holly has freshened (had her calf) with mastitis in her right rear quarter – the same one that she injured last year.  The quarter is hot and very tender to touch, and her calf is not drinking from it (probably because it tastes gross).  I’ve been stripping out as much as I can every few hours through the day, have made up a poultice of essential oils and cayenne pepper in lard to help the swelling and inflammation...

Jersey cow nuzzling newborn calf

Farm Life – A Calf is Born

At 2:30 am this morning Holly delivered a healthy bull calf.  Well, technically that should be ‘we’ delivered a healthy bull calf.  She went into labour yesterday evening, but failed to progress after the first sac appeared.  The calf was stuck with one foot presenting first at an odd angle and his great big head twisted to the side. I wonder if anyone can guess how you can tell that without a cow sized ultrasound machine?  I’ll give you...

organic homegrown tomatoes

Farm Life – Tomato Harvest

My tomato plants are growing like triffids in the vegie garden and have given me a pretty good harvest today.  Of course, if I had paid more attention to it recently and pruned several times during the growing season and staked the plants earlier, it would have been much greater harvest.  As it was the plants were so heavy that much of the fruit was laying on the ground. Definitely lesson learned for next season!  I’m proud of myself...

Rural family photographer drought fundraising

Rural Photography – Drought relief Fundraiser

Like many people over the past months, I've seen the distressing photos and videos of drought stricken Aussie farms, the skeletons of livestock dead from starvation and dehydration. The exhausted faces of farmers desperately fighting to keep their remaining livestock and themselves alive and the harrowing stories of those who just cannot face another day. I don't know about you, but I am disgusted at the way our elected government is hell bent on sending our farmers to the...

Liberty Horse Equestrian Display – South West Photography

Today was a rather auspicious day – its been a long time coming, but I am very excited to finally be setting up my studio gallery:)  I had planned to just move the boxes in, but got a little carried away and started unpacking everything.  I felt like a kid at Christmas unpacking all of my art supplies, books and art magazines – many of which I haven’t seen for well over 18 months! My mind is racing with...
